The Surveyor General's Office was constructed between 1852 and 1854 to house the headquarters of the Board of Proprietors of East New Jersey. The site was added to the New Jersey Registry of Historic Places in 1980 and the National Registry of Historic Places in 1981 along with Perth Amboy City Hall.
